Global Cinema Chains Prepare for Summer Box Office Record Attempts
As compared to ticket sales on this date in 2025, movie theatres have seen a nearly 16% spike in ticket sales with the summer season grossing over $3 million in collection and an estimate of even garnering $4 Million in the summer for the first time in many years! Globally, analytics firm Gower Street is now forecasting a $35 billion collection in this annual year, the closest we’ve seen since the pre-pandemic 2019 record collection of $42.3 billion and with an array of wonderful movies within the coming weeks, pre-booking sales are clear evidences that this summer isn’t quite over yet!

Spider-Man's Record-Breaking Presales
Amongst the most anticipated sequels in the MCU universe as well as in theatres in 2026, Spider-man : Brand New Day’s release on July 31, has already posted the best first-day presales of any film in five years, and it's the strongest advance sales performance of 2026 so far. Surpassing some top-grossers in the likes of "Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu," "Project Hail Mary," and even Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey", it has landed amongst the top-10 all time first-day presellers with even Prime Video early screenings being entirely sold out within a couple hours!
What’s also interesting to know, this is the first time a solo Spider-Man film after No Way Home in 2011 has hit such staggering numbers. And what’s more impressive? The film won’t be playing in IMAX for a long time as Nolan’s Odyssey holds an exclusive IMAX run throughout its opening week, forcing Marvel to rely on other premium theatres and experiences.
The Odyssey and the IMAX Factor
The Odyssey - Christopher Nolan’s most recent film, shot entirely on IMAX cameras, has become a strong testament for how premium formats are influencing this summer’s numbers on their own! IMAX even reportedly put the opening-week tickets on sale an entire year in advance and was sold out within hours, with IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond even jokingly saying that his old friends had been reaching out in the hopes that he could get them a ticket!

And it’s a larger and broader pattern playing out finely, premium large format screens made up more than 16% of all ticket sales before the stream of hits this summer, despite only representing a small margin of total screen worldwide. As it turns out, these record sales have made clear, audiences are definitely willing to pay more for a genuine theatrical experience, perhaps not for any screening, but surely specific ones!
The Bigger Numbers Behind the Hype
Here’s a quick comparison on how this summer stacks up against the top grossers in history and why these box-office records are grabbing the spotlight:
|
Year |
Global Box Office |
Notable Context |
|
2019 (pre-pandemic peak) |
$42.3 billion |
The all-time high the industry is still chasing |
|
2023 |
$33.9 billion |
Previous post-pandemic high point |
|
2025 |
~$33.5 billion |
Up about 12% on 2024, led by China's "Ne Zha 2" as the first non-American global chart-topper |
|
2026 (forecast) |
$35 billion |
Projected to be the strongest year since 2019, per Gower Street |
Within the 2026’s box office collections, ticket sales over $4.4 billion were already achieved by late June and even compared to 2019, it’s only a 15% difference - a gap that has been turning closer all year and would surely come down to marginal levels by the end of the summer!
Why Is This Happening Now?
There are quite a few explanations that could help us understand the unique pattern we’ve discovered this summer. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory believes that cinema today has become the top choice of individuals going through escapism and affordability. He believes that a movie or trip to the cinema, has become the popular and affordable out-of-house entertainment, especially amongst those with no huge budgets for vacations this year.
What’s also quite notable is how well films are holding onto the audiences this summer. Much-awaited projects like Project Hail Mary" dropped just 23% in its eighth week as compared to 50%-70% audience loss that a movie usually experiences. "Michael" also notably fell by only 30% between its second and third weekends, making it the first biopic to cross $1 billion in global collections! Another low-budget horror hit Obsession further decided to change these trends by growing its audience by 39% and 14% respectively in its second and third weeks and while the silent driving force behind these trends is simple - Word of mouth publicity. A phenomenon that has successfully enabled movies to go from creating opening-week curiosity to managing repeat viewership and popularity among new movie-goers at the same time!
Why The Industry Still Needs To Remain Alert!
It’s important for everyone to remain at the edge of their seats, because a single record summer doesn’t necessarily mean the cinema world is back to pre-pandemic levels. On international levels, North American theatres are still only making less than 22% pre-pandemic levels even despite a strong year, and only 53% Americans reported seeing a movie in the theatres all summer - a subtle but stark reminder that box office collections this summer are driven by engaged core of moviegoers rather than an actual return to old habits.
Another question that looms onto the 2026 Movie Calendar, the December’s “Dunesday” - same-day debut of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part Three” which could either result in the highest combined weekend collection in box office history or split audiences and underperform relative to expectations, depending on the audience’s choice. "Avengers: Doomsday" has already generated $16.5 million in advance sales just from premium-format theaters and while it is something worth taking into account, it’s important to consider that these figures are based on anticipation, and might not translate much about the film’s possible overall collections at all.
What’s In Store For 2026
With Spiderman : Brand New Day already making global headlines with biggest Hollywood openers till date, and pre-bookings for Avengers: Doomsday already under way building momentum for the December Sales, the $35 billion global forecast for 2026 is not an aspiration anymore, but a mere target to be achieved. And if the pattern continues; strong openings paired with poor week-over-week dropoffs, 2026 could redefine the standard of cinema by showcasing the power of audience and ground-breaking revenues!
