Como Thrash Manchester United 4-1 in Champions League as Nico Paz Scores Twice and Pressure Mounts on Michael Carrick

Nico Paz, the young talisman for Como was quick to add two goals onto his tally before creating a third while United under head coach Micheal Carrick were left with no answers as they extended their poor run in games to straight seven matches without a positive result across all questions while raising serious questions about the United Coach’s future, barely five months after he was rewarded with a two-year contract.

A Newcomer Meets a Wounded Giant

For Como, European Champions League nights are a new experience. The Italian club, which is currently coached by former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, finished fourth in the Serie A in 2025-26 that secured their challenge in European football for the first time. Before kick-off, Como were placed 12th in the league phase table, one place above United in 13th while arriving to the contest on high spirits from two wins from two matches at home in the tournament.

In contrast, Manchester United travelled in poorer spirits, having gone previous six matches without a win and having been surrounded by constant criticism and questions with regards to their performances as well as management decisions of the past summer transfer window. Carrick who had recently secured 12 comfortable wins out of his 17 games in charge in the past season, had managed to guide United back into the Champions league after a two-year absence that also secured a permanent two-year deal for the United legend. For this very contest, United continued to struggle with a list of injuries that handed defender Matthijs de Ligt his first competitive start after recovering from an injury back in November 2025.

How the Match Unfolded

The contest’s opening minutes were enough to foreshadow how the night was about to unravel with Diogo Dalot sending an attempt off target that received a quick response from the home side. Como’s Nico Paz collected the ball at the edge of the box, taking a moment to create space and sent a left-footed finish into the far top corner past goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United struggled to provide a response, finishing the first half without a single shot on target as their traveling supporters watched on restlessly while being frenched by the weather. Their agony deepened four minutes after the interval, with Paz delivering a superb ball to the Greek striker Tasos Douvikas who comfortably secured a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute before Paz himself capitalized on an error by Carlos Baleba in the 57th minute and slotted his second goal for the night.

United continued making attempts with their best effort emerging from Amad Diallo who was prevented by the Como goalkeeper Jean Butez. Como continued their domination with an unchallenged cross in the 76th minute that Jacobo Ramon placed with a powerful close-range header to further extend Como’s lead in the contest. Lammens continued to deny Paz from a late hat-trick while substitute Joshua Zirkzee who replaced the United Captain Fernandes grabbed a stoppage-time consolation goal from Amad’s cross, making it 4-1 in the 91st minute.

The Aftermath: Apologies, Criticism and a Touchline Row

If the match’s own dramatic moments weren't enough in itself, what followed was even more damaging than the scoreline. Following the defeat, Carrick walked past the players towards the travelling fans at the final whistle and held up his hands in apology while being teary+eyes himself. Following the match during a press interview, Carrick called the display unacceptable and accepted responsibility while expressing his regards towards the supporters. When confronted with a question on whether he continued to have the board’s backing, Carrick was quick to shift focus on digesting the game instead of thinking too far ahead.

And while supporters believed that was all, they were handed another shock after the United Captain Bruno Fernandes, who has also been substituted after 67 minutes after a quiet following, publicly pointed disapproval and questions towards the coaching staff’s approach for the match. The United Captain mentioned that choosing to not press ‘man-to-man’ was a decision that needed explanation and review from the coaching staff, a statement that he later apologized for. Consequently, during the post-match press conference, Carrick while replying to a question seeking his reaction on Bruno’s comments admitted that he was really angry while claiming that United did press man-to-man and still conceded in the second half while claiming that the players needed to run back more regardless of which press they applied, an argument that has revolved around the United Squad over the last two managers as well.

What the Result Means for Carrick and United

The immediate question that has risen since is whether Carrick survives the next few days until United return to the Premier League to meet Bournemouth who return in high spirits after emerging victorious from their meeting with Italian giants AC Milan. As things stand, the club isn't looking for an immediate dismissal and Carrick continues receiving support from the board as well as the footballing director Wilcox, but that reality could quickly change with the club having declared support towards the previous two managers just before sacking them. While Carrick looks set to manage United against Bournemouth at home on Sunday, the next fixtures against Chelsea, Aston Villa, Roma and Bayern Munich could be crucial in how the situation plays out in the near future.

What worked for Como

What failed for United

Quick start through Paz's goal inside two minutes

No shot on target in the first half

Pressing United into errors, such as Baleba's

Defensive spacing and pressing structure questioned

Clinical finishing beyond expected goals

Leadership: captain and coach publicly at odds

Strong crowd and clear tactical identity

Individual mistakes at the second and fourth goals

In football terms, the defeat especially of this magnitude alongside emerging internal conflicts translates to deeper issues that repeat in a pattern instead of a single bad night. Generally, teams tend to have a slow start to the game before beginning to chase a well-drilled side, and United began that chase right from the second minute. The tactical disagreement also points towards a disapproval of game plan and skepticism within the United dressing room, a sharp contrast from Como who played with thorough clarity and belief orchestrating a Champions League night to remember for their fans.

Conclusion

Como's victory didn't simply present a positive start to the side’s UCL campaign, but also established a statement of identity for a club coming back to compete amongst Europe’s elites. With Paz orchestrating the majority of Como’s attacks, the night belonged to a side that did the basics right, pressed well, passed effectively and finished the match with a conviction. For Manchester United, the defeat could've marked a severe reality check making it their seventh game without a win and a coach and captain trading blows in the public eye. And while both the clubs look ahead to their next fixture, the result could have significant implications on the near future of both three giants.
